Hello! Today I would like to provide all of you with an insight on what my inquiry question is. My inquiry question is: why are the United States immigration policies anti-immigrant? My inquiry question has been narrowed, and the reason I decided to narrow my question is because asking the question of why the United States immigration system is so bad? is too broad. There are many reasons that make the immigration system here in the United States bad, but in my opinion the immigration policies are the main reason for our flawed and oppressive immigration system.
For my inquiry question I have been able to identify 3 types of people who have the ability to answer my inquiry question. These people are:
- Politicians
- Journalists
- Political analysts
Politicians are the people who are in charge of creating these policies. However, each politician will have different views on immigration policy. Some might think there is nothing wrong with our policies and there are other politicians that think we need to overhaul our immigration system because our policies are so flawed and outdated. I believe that both types of politicians have a bias though, since they are only siding with one side because of their party affiliations and to get votes of their intended audience.
Journalists are the people who are covering the change in policy. They are the ones providing information to the public when there is a change in policy. For example, when children were being put in cages in migrant camps, journalists were responsible for this incident to be released to the public. They are also the people that have the ability to interview people who are in power and who have the ability to do something about these policies. However, some of these journalists might be biased depending on whether or not they have any professionalism. Most journalists do provide a flawless account of current policies or issues in the immigration system such as Jordan Shear from the New York Times, saying that " The immigration courts now have more than 800,000 pending cases; each one takes an average of 700 days to process." (Shear, 2019). This is a prime example of what journalists are capable to do for my inquiry question
Political analysts are the people I believe are the most important to my research, since they are the ones who spend time investigating these policies. They are responsible for analyzing the structure of our immigration system and the operations of government agencies such as the Department of Homeland security and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I believe that most political analysts should not have any bias, but in the current political world we live in, anything is possible as long as the price is right.
I believe that a political analyst's work would be more beneficial to me since they have done more search on the current structure of our immigration system and its policies, and they would help answer my inquiry question by providing a historical and contemporary approach on why our country's immigration policies are so flawed.
